Bayer Leverkusen closes in on Bundesliga title after Union Berlin win
Eleven-year wait could end on Saturday
Leverkusen 16 points clear of Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart
Bayer Leverkusen moved a step closer to winning their first Bundesliga title in over a decade with a 2-0 victory over Union Berlin on Tuesday.
The win leaves Leverkusen 16 points clear of second-placed Bayern Munich and 18 points ahead of third-placed VfB Stuttgart with just five games remaining.
Leverkusen could clinch the title as early as Saturday if they beat Mainz and Bayern lose to Borussia Dortmund.
It would be Leverkusen's first Bundesliga title since 2002 and their first major trophy since winning the German Cup in 1993.
Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso was delighted with his team's performance against Union Berlin.
"We played very well today," Alonso said. "We controlled the game from the start and created a lot of chances. We deserved to win."
Leverkusen's victory was made all the more impressive by the fact that they were without several key players, including Patrik Schick, Florian Wirtz, and Moussa Diaby.
However, Alonso's side showed great resilience and determination to grind out a win.
Leverkusen will now be hoping to continue their good form in the coming weeks and secure their first Bundesliga title in 21 years.
