Swiatek advances, Seyboth Wild stuns Medvedev
Medvedev's French Open hopes ended by world No124
Swiatek advances to third round, will face Danka Kovinic
Iga Swiatek's relentless march toward a second French Open crown continued into the third round on Tuesday, while world No2 Daniil Medvedev suffered a shock defeat.
Swiatek, who extended her winning streak to 31 matches, needed just 69 minutes to overcome Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1, 6-3 and set up a meeting with Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.
Later, Medvedev’s hopes of a maiden Grand Slam title outside the US Open came crashing down when he succumbed to world No124 qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets.
The Brazilian unleashed a barrage of winners and saved five break points in the third set to complete a stunning 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Medvedev’s defeat leaves Rafael Nadal as the overwhelming favorite to win a 14th French Open title.
