U.S. Attorney's Office Charges Senator Menendez and Nadine Arslanian with Fraud, Bribery, and Conspiracy

Robert Menendez, the Democratic senator from New Jersey, and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, have been indicted on charges of corruption, including fraud, bribery, and conspiracy. The indictment alleges that Menendez used his position to benefit Arslanian's business interests, including accepting campaign donations from individuals seeking favors from his office.

The charges against Menendez and Arslanian stem from a years-long investigation into their dealings with Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye doctor. Melgen was convicted in 2017 on corruption charges related to his relationship with Menendez. The indictment alleges that Menendez accepted bribes from Melgen in exchange for political favors, including supporting Melgen's business interests and intervening in a Medicare billing dispute on Melgen's behalf.

If convicted, Menendez and Arslanian face up to 45 years in prison. Both have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to go on trial in September 2023.
